Nobody Missed Writing Them

The word for Tuesday, September 8, 2026 is Nobody Missed Writing Them.

The anchor verses are Zephaniah 3:17 and Malachi 3:16.

Nobody Missed Writing Them Daily Word card for Tuesday, September 8, 2026

A woman who runs a stationery shop in Gloucestershire, England kept hearing the same thing from the other side of the counter.

People missed getting letters.

That is the part the reporting can actually support. The ache McMillan kept hearing was on the receiving side. People missed an envelope on the mat, something somebody had sat down and made for them.

Rebecca McMillan started the Sunday Letter Project in September 2025 with Karl of Wildflower Illustration Co. The pledge is small. Write one letter by hand every Sunday. To a friend, somebody you love, a stranger, or yourself. More than fifteen thousand people around the world have joined.

Then they built the part I would not have thought of.

Two strangers can write without giving each other a home address. Independent bookshops, stationery shops, and cafés serve as Letter Keepers. One person sends a letter to a participating shop. The other collects it there. The shop is not the addressee. It simply holds what passes between them.

There is one in Sellwood, in Portland, Oregon. Penwick opened in February. There is another at Lost Books Cebu in the Philippines. They take on the small work of holding and handing over mail so strangers can remain private.

A letter still goes out without a guarantee.

You finish it before you know whether anybody will answer. You seal it and let it leave your hand.

That is where Zephaniah turns the direction around.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

The subject of the verbs is GOD.

HE saves. HE rejoices. HE rests in HIS love. HE sings.

Zephaniah is speaking to a restored people, so this is not a picture of GOD sending a note into empty space. But the initiative in the verse belongs to HIM. HIS presence and joy are not something the people first manufacture and hand back to HIM.

Malachi gives a different picture.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him.

The conversation is between them. GOD's name is in it. And GOD listens.

The book is an image, like the records kept before kings. The point is not that GOD needs paper so HE will not forget. The point is that faithful words spoken between ordinary people are not lost to HIM.

A Letter Keeper does something much smaller. The shop stands in the middle and keeps the letter until the person comes.

Scripture keeps showing GOD making the first approach. HE calls to the man hiding in the garden. HE calls Abram. HE sends prophets. In CHRIST, HE comes among people who did not summon HIM.

Second century Irenaeus made a related argument against teachers who claimed that the Father had remained unknowable and only later became known. His challenge was simple. A Father able to make HIMSELF known when HE willed was not waiting for human beings to force open a door. The movement begins with GOD.

Somebody reading this has been waiting to hear from somebody.

A parent. A grown child who stopped answering. A friend who went quiet after something neither of you ever named. You check for a message you already know is not coming, and somewhere along the way you decided the next move belongs to them.

Sometimes it does.

Some doors need to remain closed because reopening them would invite harm. Love does not require access to somebody who is unsafe. This Word is not an instruction to walk back into danger.

But there are also ordinary stalemates where fairness becomes the place both people hide. Years pass because each one is waiting for the other to begin.

Scripture does not begin with humanity getting GOD's attention.

GOD speaks. GOD calls. GOD comes.

Grace is not a reply we first persuaded HIM to write.

This resolves nothing between two people who have not spoken in eleven years. Fifteen thousand Sunday letters do not cure isolation. Some letters go out and nothing comes back. Some loneliness needs more than correspondence and should never be reduced to a pen and a stamp.

What holds is smaller.

Zephaniah puts GOD in the midst of HIS people, rejoicing over them.

Malachi puts GOD listening while faithful people speak to one another, with their words held in remembrance before HIM.

The correspondence does not begin with us getting HIS attention.

HE was already there.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one who has been waiting years for somebody else to make the first move and no longer knows whether reaching out would heal or harm.
  • 🙏 To the shopkeeper holding letters for strangers who may never know the shopkeeper's name.
  • 🙏 To the one who keeps writing to somebody who rarely answers and has begun to wonder whether the words disappear.
  • 🙏 To the one whose loneliness is not the kind a letter reaches, and who is tired of being handed small solutions to a large thing.

Grace and Peace.
