They Held One Still
The word for Thursday, September 3, 2026 is They Held One Still.

Physicists split the matter wave of an atom into two paths, held one still, and let the other fall.
The team was led by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, with collaborators from Ulm and Oxford. Or Dobkowski is the lead author. Roger Penrose is among the twelve authors. The paper was published yesterday in Science Advances.
They chilled about twenty thousand rubidium atoms to near absolute zero. Each atom was placed into a quantum superposition of two trajectories. One wave packet was held stationary against gravity by magnetic fields. The other was allowed to fall freely for a few milliseconds.
Then they brought the two paths back together.
Where the matter waves interfered, the researchers measured a phase difference. It matched the phase predicted when Einstein's equivalence principle is applied to a quantum object.
That is the new thing. Gravity has been measured with atom interferometers before. This experiment directly measured the quantum phase of free fall against a stationary reference.
For an observer in free fall, gravity locally disappears. A person falling freely in an elevator feels weightless because the person, the floor, and everything around them are falling together. There is no floor pushing back against the feet.
That does not mean gravity stopped acting.
The falling wave packet still accumulated a quantum phase. But that phase could only be read as a difference because another path was held still in the laboratory frame.
They held one still.
The researchers are careful about what that means. The experiment does not unify gravity with quantum theory. It does not prove that gravity itself is quantum. It does not settle every proposed form of the equivalence principle in the quantum world. It shows that, in the low-energy regime they tested, the measured behavior is consistent with Einstein's principle.
That care matters.
GOD is not gravity. The experiment proves nothing about GOD. It gives one picture worth carrying: the absence of a felt signal is not always the absence of what is real.
Paul stood in Athens before people who had built an altar to an unknown god. He told them about the GOD they did not know, and then said something much closer than they might have expected.
For in him we live, and move, and have our being.
Live. Move. Have our being.
Breathing. Walking to work. Existing at all.
Paul does not describe GOD as something that begins when a person notices HIM. He speaks of GOD as the One in whom their lives were already being lived. Their awareness was incomplete. Their existence inside GOD was not waiting for their awareness to catch up.
Deuteronomy puts another image underneath that.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Underneath.
The place carrying the weight is not always the place you can feel.
Somebody reading this has felt nothing for a long time.
You pray and the room stays quiet. You read a page like this one and the words stay flat. Other people speak about presence, and you have no matching experience. Somewhere along the way you started wondering whether their experience proves they have something you were never given.
Feeling is real. It matters. It can be beautiful.
It is not the measure of grace.
The experiment gives a small physical example of why perception cannot carry every conclusion. In the freely falling frame there is no local sensation of gravity. The researchers needed the stationary reference path to reveal the phase difference between the two trajectories.
The missing sensation did not erase the physics.
Your missing sensation does not make GOD absent.
Grace is not something you earn by producing a feeling. It does not disappear because you cannot manufacture one. GOD is not more present on the morning you feel warm and close than on the morning when prayer sounds like words against a ceiling.
That does not explain the quiet.
It does not turn an empty morning into a full one. For some people, flatness can be part of illness and deserves medical care, not a spiritual verdict. A devotional should never ask a sick person to rename an illness as weak faith. That stays true.
The promise is smaller and stronger than an explanation.
Underneath are the everlasting arms.
Not underneath when you feel them.
Underneath.
The researchers could read the falling path because they held one still.
You may not be able to read everything happening in your own life from inside it. You may not have a reference path. You may have only the quiet and the day in front of you.
But your inability to measure GOD's nearness is not a measurement of HIS absence.
