He Put It Where Anybody Could Walk In

There is a town in Illinois called Cambridge, and on a street there you will find a building with a sign out front that a grandmother made by hand. The sign says Cambridge Natural History Museum.
The curator is eleven years old. His name is Anderson Taylor.
He was about three when he watched a show about dinosaurs and decided he wanted to find a fossil. So he went outside to the driveway.
The gravel in that driveway is limestone. His own explanation: limestone is legitimately just fossils.
He found one. There was a little corkscrew shape pressed into the rock, a crinoid, an animal that lived in ancient seas and looked like a plant.
It had been in the driveway the entire time. His family had been parking on it for years.
More came after that. Some from family trips. Some as birthday and Christmas presents. Some he and his friends dug out of the gravel on the playground at school, which is the sort of thing other children walk across on the way to the swings.
When he was seven the family went to Scotland to look for dinosaur footprints on a beach, and somebody told them about a small museum nearby. He went. He liked it. He started planning one of his own.
Then the collection got large enough that, as he tells it, his mother wanted it out of the house.
A person has two options at that point.
You can put it in boxes. You can build a shelf. You can keep the whole thing where only you and the people you invite will ever see it.
He made presentations to his city. More than one. He kept going back until they gave him a grant for seed money. He worked out an arrangement with the town for a municipal building, rent free for a year and a half, while his family raised the money to buy it.
Then he opened the doors.
Hundreds of people have come through. Neighbors have donated things to the collection. When somebody does not believe an eleven year old runs the place, he shows them a plaque from Guinness that recognizes him as the youngest male museum curator on record.
He was nine years and three hundred forty days old when he opened it.
Now go to the fifteenth chapter of John, on the last night, where Jesus says something about HIS friends that turns on one detail.
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Read the reason HE gives.
It is not that they had earned it. It is not that they were finally ready. HE says they are no longer servants because a servant does not know what his master is doing, and HE has told them everything.
The difference Jesus names between a servant and a friend, in that sentence, is that the friend is brought into what the master is doing.
There were teachers a hundred years later who could not live with that. They taught that after the resurrection Christ instructed only a handful of disciples, the ones HE knew were capable of understanding the deep things. Everybody else got the beginner version.
Those systems differed in detail, but they shared an instinct: there was an inside, and deeper knowledge belonged to the initiated.
Christ says the opposite in one line. All things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
And a few verses earlier HE had already told them something else.
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Already clean. Before the fruit. Before any of it.
That is the order GOD works in and it never changes. The giving comes first. The knowing comes first. GOD does not run a system where access is earned in stages, and there is no back room where the real material is kept for people who have proven something.
You may be sitting on something you have been keeping in the house.
What you learned in the worst year of your life. What you know about a certain kind of grief because you have been through it. What you figured out about being a parent to a difficult kid, or getting sober, or burying somebody.
You have probably told yourself the people around you would not understand it, or that it is not the kind of thing anybody puts on a shelf where strangers can look.
The gravel in the driveway was full of fossils and nobody had ever looked down.
A nine year old opened a building so they could.
I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.
