Somebody Had Read the Numbers Daily Word card for Wednesday, August 19, 2026

Last Thursday, one hundred public school teachers in Marin County, California were called into a conference room and not told why.

They teach in the Ross Valley School District. Marin County is one of the wealthiest places in the United States, and those teachers are the lowest paid in it. Their district sits in the bottom four percent of the entire state for money spent per student. Eleven thousand seven hundred seventy-one dollars a child, against a California average of over fourteen thousand.

The reason is technical, and it is not the fault of anybody in that room. Property values there are enormous, but the assessed values are low, because people move in and stay for decades and the tax law holds their assessment down. The houses are worth a fortune. The schools are not funded like it.

So a hundred teachers walked into a meeting on the Thursday before school started, at the end of a summer, into a job that pays them less than any comparable job in their county.

A woman named Maja Kristin was standing there.

She has lived in that county a long time. She is not on the school board. She does not work for the district. Nobody assigned her anything.

At some point she had gone and looked up how her local schools were funded. She found the bottom four percent. She found the salary comparison. She sat with numbers that were public and available to anybody and that almost nobody reads, and she decided that what she was looking at was an injustice.

Then she wrote one million dollars in checks.

The principals had the envelopes in their hands before the teachers ever sat down. Kristin spoke for a few minutes, and then the teachers were told to open what they were holding.

Nine thousand one hundred sixty-one dollars and seventy cents. Each.

One of them said afterward that she had never in her life received a gift like that from somebody she did not know, whose child she had never taught.

And Kristin said something to the room that was not about herself. She said that citizens can write direct checks. She said she hoped word would get out and other people in that county who care about public schools would do something, whether by writing a check or by working the politics.

Every one of those teachers walked into that room believing nobody was tracking their situation.

Somebody had been reading the numbers for a while.

Now go to an upper room on the last night, where eleven men are about to lose the only thing holding their lives together.

Jesus has told them HE is leaving. They do not understand it and they are frightened, and HE says something to them that the King James renders in a word we do not use anymore.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The word underneath comfortless is the word for orphans.

That is what HE is promising them they will not be. Not sad. Not confused. Not without instructions. Orphaned. Left with nobody whose job it is to come back for you.

And a few minutes earlier Philip had asked HIM for the one thing he thought was still missing. Show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.

He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.

Philip had been standing next to the answer for three years.

He was not being stupid. He was doing what people do. He assumed the real thing was somewhere else, held by somebody higher up, and that what he had in front of him was the local version. Jesus corrects him without any heat in it. You have been looking at HIM. You have been eating with HIM.

There is a version of GOD that people carry around without ever putting it into words. In that version HE is at a distance, and HE finds out about your situation when somebody tells HIM, and the telling is your job, and you had better do it correctly.

That is not the GOD who came to that table.

HE arrived already knowing. Nobody briefed HIM on Peter. Nobody had to explain to HIM what was going to happen in the courtyard before the rooster. HE knew every one of them better than they knew themselves, and HE sat down to eat with them anyway, and then HE promised HE would be back.

HE knew what was coming for those men before they did. HE had already made arrangements. HE told them so, in advance, in a room where nobody understood what HE was talking about.

You may be sitting in something today that nobody has noticed. No one has asked. Nothing has been said. The numbers on your life are public and available and nobody appears to have looked.

There is somebody who has read it.

The envelopes were in the room before anybody sat down.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one who believes your situation has gone unread by anybody.
  • 🙏 To the one doing work that is valued everywhere except where you are.
  • 🙏 To the one who feels orphaned inside a life that looks fine from outside.
  • 🙏 To the one who has been asking GOD to show up, while standing next to HIM.

Grace and Peace.
