A Lump of Figs Daily Word card for Friday, August 7, 2026

Hezekiah was dying.

The prophet Isaiah came to him with the message nobody wants. Set your house in order, because you are going to die and not live. That was the word. No softening.

So Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed and wept.

And before Isaiah had even crossed the middle court on his way out, GOD sent him back. I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. I will heal you.

That is the part people quote.

The verse that comes next is one almost nobody quotes.

And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

Stop and look at what just happened.

GOD had promised the healing out loud, through a prophet, less than a minute earlier. And the prophet's very next move was to call for a poultice.

Not instead of the promise. Right after it. In the same conversation, in the same room, with the same mouth.

Nobody there thought the figs were competing with GOD.

And somebody had to go get them. Somebody walked out, found figs, mashed them into a paste, came back, and pressed it onto a sick man's skin. That was plain work done with plain hands, and it was part of the healing GOD had promised sixty seconds earlier.

Stay on that a moment, because a sentence goes around that has hurt a great many people.

The sentence says that needing help is a shortage of faith. That a person who really trusted GOD would not need the appointment, or the prescription, or the counselor, or the meeting on Tuesday nights. That taking the medicine is a kind of hedge, and the strong ones pray it away instead.

That sentence is not in the Bible.

What is in the Bible is a prophet reaching for figs.

Look at Saul. When he was tormented and could not get free of it, his servants did not tell him to pray harder or examine his sins. They went looking for somebody who could play music. They found a young man named David, and he came and played, and Saul was refreshed and it was well with him.

The help was a person in the room with an instrument in his hands.

Look at Joseph, awake with a problem that had no clean answer. GOD did not send him a warm feeling. GOD sent a messenger with information.

Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife.

Read what he was given. Not the removal of the fear. A presence, and a sentence, and the sentence was practical. Go ahead and marry her.

Nine days ago, at Al-Muhafaza Stadium in Damascus, they played the final of Syria's first football tournament for people with disabilities. The Damascus Governorate Club beat the Omayya Club. Players warmed up and prayed together under a full moon.

I do not know their names. I do not know one thing about how any of them came to be there, and I am not going to guess.

What I know is what the photographs show. A goalkeeper stretching out for a save. A man juggling the ball before kickoff. A player stretching next to his crutch on the grass. And afterward, a man resting on his crutches with a winner's medal around his neck.

The crutches and the medal are in the same picture.

Nobody on that field was pretending the crutches were not there. The crutches were how he got down the field to win.

GOD is not embarrassed by your equipment.

The figs. The harp. The crutch. The appointment sitting in your calendar for next Thursday. The prescription you fill on the first of the month. The number you saved eight weeks ago and have not called.

None of that is a workaround. None of it means you failed at believing.

The figs did not make GOD smaller. They did not shrink the promise or split the credit. GOD said the man would be healed, and then GOD's own prophet told them exactly where to put the poultice.

If you are carrying something heavy in your mind right now, and you have been telling yourself that a stronger person would have prayed their way out of it by now, please hear this. GOD healed Hezekiah. Isaiah still called for the figs.

Talk to somebody who knows what they are doing. A doctor. A counselor. Your own physician. That is not the back door. It is the front one, and it has been standing open since the eighth century before Christ.

Isaiah prayed, and then he sent for figs.

Both of those were faith.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one who has been told that needing help means your faith is thin.
  • 🙏 To the one with the number saved who has not made the call.
  • 🙏 To the one who prays every morning and takes the medication every morning and has been made to feel that one cancels the other.
  • 🙏 To the one whose hands were shaking, and who went anyway.

Grace and Peace.
