A woman named Jacqueline Mang sat down to eat at a Chili's in Manhattan Beach, California. It was late. The staff were slammed. She watched her server, Nenii, running several tables at once and not getting a break.

Mang grew up studying fine art. She loved to paint. Later, working on a graphic design degree, she got an assignment to make a self portrait using any medium she wanted. Her childhood nickname had been Tomato. So she painted herself with ketchup, using tomatoes and a fork and a knife.

She never stopped. Since then she has made portraits of family and friends out of whatever sauce is on the table. When somebody asked her why she did it for a stranger, she said the drawings had brought the people she loved a lot of joy, and she figured she would share it with somebody she did not know.

So she took a white dinner plate, and a fork, and ketchup, and she drew Nenii.

Now think about what that plate was.

It is a restaurant plate. It goes to the dish pit. Somebody scrapes it, racks it, and runs it through a machine hot enough to sanitize it, and it comes out the other end white again and stacks up with the rest of them for the lunch shift.

Mang knew that when she started. She was drawing on a surface built to be wiped clean.

She made something with no future in it.

We do not usually work that way. We want the thing to still be there later. We save the file. We keep the photograph. We want some evidence that the effort happened, and it is a reasonable thing to want. Nobody sets out to spend an afternoon on something that will be gone before dinner. We have a word for that, and the word is wasted.

Open Matthew and look at Joseph, before any of it made sense to him.

Mary is pregnant. As far as Joseph knows, he is not the father, and there is no version of this that does not humiliate him in a town where everybody talks. The law gave him a public option. He was entitled to it.

Here is what the text says. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

He planned the quiet one.

No hearing. No witnesses. No moment where the neighbors learned he had been wronged and he had been right. He was going to become the man whose fiancée quietly disappeared, and let everybody draw whatever conclusion they wanted, and never correct the record.

He never had to go through with it. The angel came that night, and the angel came because GOD was already moving, not as a payment for how well Joseph had handled the week. But the plan tells you who he was before anyone was watching. He had chosen the version that would leave nothing behind.

Now go back further than Joseph.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.

Take the word flesh by itself. Flesh bruises. Flesh gets hungry and tired. Flesh runs a fever, and splinters, and bleeds, and eventually stops.

GOD did not protect HIMSELF from mortality. HE took a body that could bruise, hunger, bleed, and die.

There were teachers a hundred years later who could not accept that. They built enormous systems, layer stacked on layer, whole ladders of invented beings, and the entire purpose of the machinery was to keep the highest GOD from ever having to touch anything that decays. They found the idea beneath HIM.

The gospel opens by saying HE came down into exactly that.

So the plate went in the dishwasher. Nenii finished her shift and went home. Mang paid her bill and left.

And nothing about that night is recoverable. There is no artifact. The ketchup is gone. The plate is back in a stack.

But for a few minutes, a woman who was drowning got looked at by somebody who had no reason to look.

Most of what matters gets washed. The meal you cooked is eaten. The room you cleaned gets dirty by Thursday. The bed you made will be unmade tonight. The hour you sat with somebody who was falling apart leaves no record anywhere, and you cannot point to it, and nobody will ever confirm it happened.

Every one of those was real. Not one of them survives the week. Being unable to produce a thing later is not evidence that it never happened.

GOD did not build a world where only the permanent things count.

HE built one where HE came into a body that died.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one whose work gets undone every day and started over every morning.
  • 🙏 To the one who wants some proof that what you did mattered, and there is none to find.
  • 🙏 To the one running six tables tonight while nobody looks up.
  • 🙏 To the one who chose the quiet version and never got the credit.

Grace and Peace.
