She Noticed the Foil

The word for Tuesday, August 4, 2026 is She Noticed the Foil.

The anchor verse is Genesis 6:9.

She Noticed the Foil Daily Word card for Tuesday, August 4, 2026

On a scorching morning in Aix-les-Bains, a lakeside town in the southeast of France, a postal worker rang a doorbell. Her name is Harmony Simon. She is forty one years old. She was not there to deliver anything.

Martine Combe is sixty eight. She has diabetes and asthma. She let the postal worker in.

The first thing Simon did was look at the windows.

Combe had taped aluminum foil over the glass to keep the sun out. It was peeling off. It was the kind of fix a person makes alone with what is in the drawer, and it was barely holding.

Simon did not lecture her about it. She said that in her own apartment she had attached survival blankets to the windows, the shiny wraps runners get handed after a marathon. She said it brought the temperature down by four degrees.

That is the whole story. A woman came to a door, saw foil peeling off a window, and had something better to say about it.

Here is why she was standing there.

France went through a heat wave in June that broke records. The Prime Minister wrote a letter to the mayors of the country, and in it he said that postal workers are often the only people who have regular contact with the elderly and the isolated. So the policy changed. Every postal worker in France is now asked to check on older people while they carry the mail.

France did not build anything new. It asked the sixty five thousand people already walking those streets to look harder.

And there is a detail in this that will not leave me alone.

Every French city keeps a register of vulnerable residents who want to be contacted when it gets dangerous. The lists exist. But lists go stale. People move. People never sign up. People do not think of themselves as vulnerable until the day they are.

The whole point of sending the postal workers is the people the registers miss.

Martine Combe did not call anyone. She did not put her name down. She taped foil to her windows and made do, the way people do.

Somebody came anyway.

Turn to the sixth chapter of Genesis, where the world has gone as wrong as it can go. The text says the wickedness of man was great, and that every thought of his heart was evil, all the time. That is the neighborhood. That is the whole register.

Then comes one sentence, and the order of it matters more than anything else in the chapter.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Grace first. Before one word about what kind of man he was, the text says GOD looked at him and gave.

Only then does the next verse describe him. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

In his generations. Meaning nobody else was doing it. There was no congregation. No study group. No one to compare notes with at the end of a hard week. Noah walked with GOD for years in a place where that was a category of one.

Nobody nominated Noah. Nobody put him forward. There was no list.

GOD saw him.

That is the thing I want you to have today. GOD does not work from a register. HE is not going down a roster of people who signed up correctly, in the right order, at the right time. The people who fall through every system are the ones HE goes looking for.

Paul says something in Galatians that fits in your pocket. Let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Your work. Not the work of the person you keep measuring yourself against, whose whole story you have never once seen.

And there is a man in Proverbs named Agur who prayed the strangest prayer in the book. He asked GOD for neither poverty nor riches. He asked to be fed with the food that was right for him. He wanted the plain amount. Enough, and nothing that would wreck him.

Simon did not bring Martine Combe a rescue. She brought her a better window covering. Four degrees.

Most of what love looks like on a given day is about that size.

I am not dressing a small thing up to sound large. It was small. It also meant that a woman with asthma slept in a cooler room, and somebody knew her name, and the door had been opened once that week.

You will probably not do anything today that anyone records. You may knock on a door and say one useful sentence. You may notice that somebody has been making do with foil and taping it back up every morning and telling everyone that it is fine.

Nobody sent for Harmony Simon.

She was already coming, and she looked.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one who never made it onto anybody's list.
  • 🙏 To the one doing something small today that will not be recorded anywhere.
  • 🙏 To the one measuring your life against someone whose whole story you cannot see.
  • 🙏 To the one who has been taping foil over the window and telling everyone it is fine.

Grace and Peace.
