Ready When She Asked Daily Word card for Saturday, August 1, 2026

Josh Bateman spent more than two hundred hours practicing on a mannequin head.

He is a single father in St. George, Utah, and he decided early that his daughter Blake would never go without. So he watched tutorials. He worked the strands over and over until his hands knew the pattern, learning styles suited to her hair. Ponytail. French braid. Dutch braid. Four strand braid. He learned all of it.

Then came the part of the story most people skip past.

She did not ask him for about a year.

Blake is ten now, and her father says plainly what happened. She is at the age where she does not want Dad helping with things. So for roughly a year, all of that practice sat in his hands unused. Two hundred hours, and nobody asked.

He stayed ready anyway.

And one evening she came and said, Dad, can you French braid my hair? A camera in the house caught his answer. Heck yeah. He braided her hair into pigtails, and the moment has since been watched more than twenty million times.

Ask why he kept practicing through a year of not being needed, and he gives the reason himself. It is important to him that she knows she can ask her dad anything in life, and he will be there to help.

That is not a story about skill. It is a story about a father who refused to become unavailable.

There is a particular kind of love in that. Readiness is easy to sustain while it is being used. What Bateman did was harder and quieter. He kept it alive through a long stretch when it was not needed or noticed, because the point was never the braid. The point was that when she finally turned toward him, she would not find a man who had given up on being asked.

As water reflects the face, Proverbs says, so one's life reflects the heart. What is practiced quietly eventually shows. The hands that stayed with ordinary work are ready when the request finally comes, and the heart trained in small attentions can meet the moment without scrambling. The reflection does not lie.

David wrote that he would extol the LORD at all times, that HIS praise would always be on his lips. Always is the difficult word. Not in the good weeks only. Not only when the request comes and everything works. Continually, which means the drive and the waiting and the ordinary quiet minutes get folded into the same worship as the high moments. Most of a life is made of hours nobody will ever watch, and those hours are where a heart is formed.

Irenaeus of Lyons, a second-century teacher who defended the faith against those who dressed up error to look like truth, watched people go the other direction. They coined elaborate new names for powers and levels no one had ever received, each teacher adding another title, another distinction that existed only in the mind that made it. The systems grew more complicated and less shared, and the teachers ended up contradicting one another. He recorded it in order to expose it. What holds is not the impressive private invention. It is the plain thing handed down and practiced.

Now turn the whole picture around, because this is where it stops being about your effort.

You are not mainly the father in this story. You are the daughter who did not ask for a year.

That is the honest position for most of us. We go long stretches without asking GOD for anything, out of independence or distraction or the quiet conviction that we should be able to manage. And the entire time, HE has been ready. Not waiting to lecture us about the gap. Ready.

That is what Scripture says about HIM again and again. The father in the parable was watching the road while his son was still a long way off. Christ did not wait for us to arrive prepared. HE came the whole distance and made us HIS at HIS own cost, and the readiness was never ours.

So yes, keep the ordinary practice. Stay with the small faithful things, the minutes given to Scripture and prayer that look like nothing and quietly form a life. Worry fills the mind with noise, and steady attention given to GOD slowly displaces it. Not because every problem gets solved. Because the heart stays near the source. That work is never wasted.

But if you are reading this and you have not asked in a long time, hear the better half. Your hours are not the point. HIS are. You do not need to earn your way back into the conversation or explain the silence first.

He was ready the whole time. Just ask.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one whose quiet practice feels too small to matter, may it prove itself when the moment finally asks.
  • 🙏 To the one tempted to invent something more impressive, may the plain thing handed down hold steady.
  • 🙏 To the one who has not asked in a long time, may you find HIM already ready and not keeping score.
  • 🙏 To the one waiting to be needed, may you stay available the way a good father stays available.

Grace and Peace.
