This morning’s word is Unity in Freedom.
The anchor verses are Colossians 2:15 and John 19:11.
The sky over Washington will light up tomorrow with 850,000 fireworks, a world record attempt to celebrate 250 years of American independence. The crowds will cheer, the flags will wave, and for a moment the noise of division will fade into the background. The red glare will paint the night, and the bursts of color will reflect in the eyes of millions gathered to remember what it means to be one nation. But the enemy does not rest. He knows that unity is the one thing he cannot abide. When we stand together, his schemes crumble. When we remember whose we are, his illusions shatter.
On July 4, 1776, fifty-six men pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to one another. They were not all alike. They were farmers and lawyers, merchants and planters, each with their own story. But they understood something the enemy fears. There is power in unity. The Declaration’s closing words still echo. “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”
Two thousand years earlier, another covenant was written in blood on a cross at Golgotha. The enemy thought the darkness at noon was his triumph, that the nails in Jesus’ hands were his victory. Yet the empty tomb declared otherwise. The moment he thought he had divided GOD from humanity forever was the moment GOD disarmed him for all eternity. The powers and authorities were exposed, made a public spectacle, triumphed over by the cross, where what looked like defeat became the birth pangs of victory.
Pilate stood before Jesus, flexing his earthly muscle. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” But Jesus answered with a truth that echoes through every age. “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” The Roman Empire, with all its legions and might, was but a piece in a story already written. The real power was never in Pilate’s hand. It was in the nail-scarred hands of the One who chose to surrender HIS life so that we might find ours.
This is the paradox of true freedom. It is not found in independence from GOD but in dependence on HIM. The enemy wants us to believe we must fight for ourselves, that division is our only protection. He whispers that we must build walls to keep ourselves safe. But the cross proves him wrong. The resurrection proves him a liar. Love is stronger than death, and unity is stronger than division.
The early church understood this. They were an unlikely family. Slaves and merchants, Jews and Greeks, rich and poor, sharing one loaf at one table. The world had never seen anything like it. They faced lions and flames, prisons and persecutions, yet they stood together. The gates of hell could not prevail against them. When they were united, the enemy had no answer. When they remembered their citizenship was in heaven, the powers of this world had no power over them.
Unity was never sameness. The fifty-six signers proved that. So did the twelve, a tax collector and a zealot sent out from the same table. What held them together was allegiance to Someone greater than their differences.
So what does that look like on an ordinary Friday, far from the fireworks? It looks small. Somewhere in your life there is a fracture. A brother you have not called. A friendship that went quiet after a hard argument. A chair at the table that has been empty too long. You do not have to repair every break today. Start with one. Make the call you have been putting off. Send the message that says I miss you, and leave the old fight out of it. Sit down with the person you disagree with and listen longer than you speak. The enemy wants the silence to harden into a wall. Every small act of reconciliation pulls a brick out of it. And you do not go alone. The One who disarmed the powers goes with you.
As the fireworks burst overhead, remember this. The same GOD who disarmed the powers at the cross invites us to lay down our divisions today. The same GOD who turned a Roman execution into history’s greatest victory can turn our conflicts into covenants, our separation into solidarity, our fear into faith.
The enemy loves when we are separated. He stokes the fires of division because he knows a house divided cannot stand. But a house united under GOD cannot be shaken.
