Listening Past the Noise

This morning’s word is Listening Past the Noise.

The anchor verses are 1 Peter 3:15 and Proverbs 20:22.

A scientist spent fifteen years listening to birds, and what she learned is something you need on a loud day.

Her name is Julie Elie, and she works at a university in California. For more than a decade she listened to zebra finches, the small chatty songbirds you might know from a pet store, recording thousands of their calls. This year she won a major prize for what she found. These birds have a real vocabulary, eleven core calls, sounds for distress, for hunger, for simply saying hello. She heard all that chirping and asked a simple question. What are they saying?

Then she tested whether the birds were listening for meaning, or just reacting to sound. When they made a mistake, they mixed up calls that meant similar things, not calls that merely sounded alike. They were not reacting to how loud or how sharp a sound was. They were listening underneath it, for what it meant.

A small bird can do that. It can hear past the noise and listen for the meaning. Most days, that is harder for us than for them.

Because the world is loud, and a lot of the noise is built to scare you. The headline written to alarm you. The message from someone who wants you rattled. The old voice that lists everything that could go wrong. The threat that says you are not safe, it is all about to fall apart. Loud, sharp, and constant.

There is a very old story about this. A powerful king named Sennacherib marched on a city, and before he fired a single arrow, he sent messengers to shout threats over the wall. He listed every nation he had already crushed and told the people inside that trusting GOD was a waste. He was trying to win the battle in their minds before the real one started. He was making noise.

And GOD’s answer was not to argue with the volume. GOD said of that raging king, I know how you rage against me, and then the striking line, I will put my hook in your nose and turn you back the way you came. The loud one does not get the last word. The threat that seems unstoppable has a limit, and GOD sets it. The noise was real and the danger felt total, but it was not the truth underneath, and it did not rule the people who listened past it.

So how do you listen past the noise on a hard day? Two things, both quieter than the noise.

The first is hope. Not the cheerful kind that pretends nothing is wrong, but the deep kind that holds even when things do. There is a line in an old letter written to people who were suffering. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that you have, it says, but do this with gentleness and respect. People treat that as a verse about winning arguments. It is not. When everything is loud and someone notices you are still standing and asks how, you get to tell them, quietly, the reason you still hope. You do not have to raise your voice to say it.

The second is refusing to repay the noise in kind. When someone comes at you with hostility, every instinct says match it and settle the score. But an old proverb says something better. Do not say, I will pay you back for this wrong. Wait for the LORD. That is not weakness, and does not let the wrong win. It refuses to let the loud thing turn you into more of the same. You leave the settling to the One who has the final word, and keep your heart steady.

There is a danger to watch for, named by a man who wrote his letters on the way to die for his faith. He warned his friends that the real damage the noise does is not that it defeats you in an argument. It is that, worn down by it, you slowly grow weak in your love. That is what it is really after. Not to out-reason you, but to make you hard and bitter.

So today, when it gets loud, be like the small bird. Do not react to the volume. Listen underneath it, for what is true and for what GOD is actually saying. Hold your hope quietly. Refuse to repay the wrong. And do not let the noise make you weak in your love.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one being shouted at by fear today: the loud thing does not get the last word. It has a limit, and GOD sets it. Listen underneath the noise for what is true.
  • 🙏 To the one whose hope is quiet and keeps getting drowned out: hold it anyway. When someone asks how you are still standing, you get to tell them, gently, and that quiet answer is louder than the threat.
  • 🙏 To the one itching to repay a wrong: you do not have to settle the score. Wait for the One who has the final word, and keep your heart steady.
  • 🙏 To the one growing hard under the noise: that is what it is after. Do not let it. Stay tender. Do not grow weak in your love.
