White Gold in the Dark

This morning’s word is White Gold in the Dark.

The anchor passage is Philippians 4:12-13.

A ring sat in a sewer pipe for ten years, and the whole time, it was exactly what it had always been.

This happened last week in Michigan. A Howell plumbing company was on an emergency call at a shopping plaza in Hartland when one of them saw something shining in the muck of a pipe. He picked it up. It looked like an old ring, caked over and dull, the kind of thing you would not look at twice. He asked the other man what they should do with it. And the owner of the company said the thing that started everything. Let us see if we can find who it belongs to.

So they posted a picture online, and it jogged a memory. A woman named Sue, who worked at a spa nearby, remembered something from ten years before. A customer had dropped a ring down a toilet. The two of them pulled on rubber gloves and reached in trying to get it back, and it was gone. Lost for good, everyone thought.

The ring belonged to Carol Oram, married to her husband Roger more than sixty years. The paperwork on it goes back to 1965. She had given it up for lost a decade ago and never expected to see it again. When she finally came in and saw it, she said, that looks like mine. She put it on. She cried.

When they pulled it out, everyone assumed it was cheap yellow gold. That is what years of buildup had made it look like. They took it to a jeweler to be cleaned, and under the grime it was not yellow gold at all. It was white gold. Finer than anyone guessed, and it had been white gold the entire time. Through ten years in the dark. The ring never changed. Only what people could see of it changed.

That ring did nothing for ten years. It did not strive or earn its way home or prove it was worth finding. It sat in the dark, and its worth never moved an inch. The pipe did not make it less. Being lost did not make it less. It was what it had always been, whether anyone could see it or not.

There is a pressure that whispers the opposite. Be more. Do more. Prove you are worth keeping. It tells you your value is something you generate, something you earn again every morning, and that if you stop, you will turn out cheap after all. Yellow gold under a little polish. The quiet fear that you are only worth what you produced this week.

But GOD does not assess you the way that fear does. GOD is not grading you. You are not valuable because of what you make or win or finish. You are valuable because of whose you are. Your worth is not something you generate. It is something He assigned, and it holds in the light and it holds in the dark, and it does not move when you stop performing, because it never depended on your performing in the first place.

There was a man who learned this slowly, and wrote it down. Paul had been rich and hungry, celebrated and also beaten and jailed. Out of all of it he wrote a line people quote without always hearing it. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Read what he says right before it. He says he has learned the secret of being content whether he has plenty or whether he is in want. The all things is not winning. The all things is being at peace in any circumstance, full or empty, seen or forgotten, because the strength was never his to manufacture. It was Christ in him, holding steady when everything outside him changed.

That is the strength that does not depend on the pipe you are in. You do not have to climb out of the dark to be worth something. You do not have to be polished and seen to be white gold. You already are what HE made you, and HE has not lost track of you, not for one of those ten years.

So if you are tired of proving, tired of earning a worth that never seems to stay earned, hear what the ring already knows. You are not cheap. You never were. The grime is not the truth of you. What you are does not change in the dark.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one worn out from proving you are worth keeping: stop digging. Your worth was never down there to earn. It was assigned by GOD, and it holds.
  • 🙏 To the one who feels lost and buried and forgotten: you have not become less. You are exactly what HE made you, white gold under all of it, and HE knows right where you are.
  • 🙏 To the one sure you are only worth what you produced this week: GOD is not grading you. He is not measuring your output. He is holding what belongs to HIM.
  • 🙏 To the one in the dark a long time: it was always going to be cleaned and seen. What you are did not change while you waited. Rest in the One whose strength holds you, full or empty, found or lost.
