The Hand on the Other End

This morning’s word is The Hand on the Other End.

The anchor verses are Psalm 34:18 and 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

A stroke takes more than a moment. It takes the road home.

Almost eight hundred thousand people in this country survive a stroke every year, and for many of them the hardest work comes after the hospital. The long road back. Learning to walk again. The leg that will not lift. The body that used to obey, gone quiet and strange.

This spring, scientists in Illinois built something to help. The work came out of Northwestern University and a rehabilitation hospital in Chicago, and it was published in June. They built a pair of leg braces, one worn by the patient and one worn by the therapist, and the two are linked. When the patient moves, the therapist feels it. When the therapist moves, the patient feels it. The connection works like a spring between them, in real time. The therapist is not doing the walking. The patient is. But the therapist is there in the movement, holding the weak places and steadying the steps that wobble.

The hospital said something simple about what it changes. For years, therapists have walked alongside stroke survivors. Now they are walking with them.

Hold that. Alongside, and now with. There is a hand on the other end.

That is the thing the body relearns, and it is the thing the soul has always needed. We were not built to stand alone. We were built to be held up.

Ignatius of Antioch knew it from inside a prison. Ignatius of Antioch was a second-century bishop and martyr who wrote seven letters to early churches on his way to Rome and execution. He was the one in chains. And in his letter to the church at Tralles he does not ask them to admire his courage. He asks them to hold each other up. Refresh one another, he writes. Care for the ones who lead you. And then he asks for something you would not expect from a man so strong. Pray for me, he says, who have need of your love. The bishop in chains asks the ordinary people for their prayers. He does not write from above them. He writes as one who still needs the people around him.

The strong one still needs holding. The brave one still needs the hand on the other end.

We get this wrong. We think toughness means standing alone, feeling nothing, growing a skin so thick that nothing gets through. But a thick skin is often just a cover for a hard heart. That is not strength. It is hiding.

Real strength keeps walking through the hard stretch, and it does not walk alone. It feels the pain and keeps moving anyway, because it is not moving by itself.

The enemy of your soul knows this, and so he works the other way. He does not charge the strong. He isolates them first. A lion on the hunt does not run at the whole herd. It cuts one animal off, gets it alone, and then it moves in. Get the person sure that no one would understand, that the weak place is theirs to carry by themselves. Then move in.

The answer to that is not a stronger person. The answer is a connected one.

Scripture says it two ways, and both are true at once. Encourage one another and build each other up, the letter to the Thessalonians says. That is the work we do for each other. We are the brace on the other leg, feeling it when someone wobbles, steadying them.

And then there is the half underneath. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, the Psalm says, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. GOD does not send the stroke. He does not author the dark stretch. He is not the one who cuts you off and moves in. He is the one who draws near when you are crushed.

Hear this plainly. GOD never tells you to be crushed so that you can grow. The crushing is not the gift. His nearness in it is the gift. He does not stand across the room and call out instructions. He puts on the other brace. He feels every wobble. He walks with you, step by uncertain step, all the way back to your feet.

So if you are on the long road back today, from a loss, from a failure, from a dark stretch you did not choose, hear what the bishop knew and the body relearns. You were never meant to do it alone. There is a hand on the other end. Be that hand for someone today, and let GOD be that hand for you.

I am not here to prove myself. I am here to make HIM visible.

  • 🙏 To the one walking the long road back, who cannot feel the next step coming: there is a hand on the other end, and it is His.
  • 🙏 To the one cut off and told to carry it alone: the lie is the isolation. Reach out. The hand is already reaching for you.
  • 🙏 To the one who has grown a thick skin to keep the pain out: it is keeping the help out too. There is no shame in the wobble.
  • 🙏 To the one strong enough to hold someone today: go put on the other brace. Feel where they are weak, and let them walk.
